Submit a Sample for Radiocarbon Dating

Tell Benzene Line about your sample, its context and your scientific question so suitability can be reviewed before any physical material is sent.

Contact Us Before Sending Any Sample

Contact Benzene Line and receive confirmation before sending any physical sample. Shipping or handover instructions are provided only after the material has been reviewed and accepted.

1. Tell Us About Your Sample

Provide the material, number of samples, approximate sample size or mass if known, expected age if known, origin and context, previous conservation or chemical treatment, research question and country from which the sample would be sent.

2. We Review Suitability

Acceptance depends on the material, available amount, preservation, contamination history and scientific objective. Not every carbon-containing object preserves a fraction that can answer the intended question.

3. Receive Submission Instructions

If the sample is accepted for further work, Benzene Line will provide the applicable submission or handover instructions. Do not ship material before receiving that confirmation.

4. Sample Processing and Measurement

The accepted material follows an appropriate selection, pretreatment, carbon-conversion and C-14 measurement workflow. The exact route depends on the sample and the analytical objective.

5. Receive the Result

Measurement data are evaluated and used in radiocarbon age calculation and reporting as agreed for the accepted sample. Exact outputs must be confirmed for the project; this page does not promise calibration, a particular report format, precision or turnaround time.
